Frequently Asked
Our wedding dress code is Hawaiian Formal, think elevated tropical elegance with a polished resort feel.
For gentlemen, we encourage dressy Hawaiian-inspired shirts or refined linen attire. A tasteful tropical print, quality fabric, and tailored fit are all great choices. Think elevated island style rather than casual beachwear. Please pair your shirt with linen trousers, dress pants, or tailored chinos. Shorts are not appropriate for the wedding ceremony or reception.
For ladies, floor-length gowns, elegant midi dresses, dressy jumpsuits, and sophisticated tropical prints or vibrant colors are all wonderful options. We love the spirit of the islands and encourage guests to embrace color and pattern while keeping the overall look wedding-appropriate and polished.
For footwear, we kindly ask guests to avoid flip-flops. Gentlemen may consider loafers, boat shoes, espadrilles, or premium leather sneakers. Ladies may choose block heels, wedges, dressy sandals, or other elegant footwear suitable for a celebration.
Most importantly, we want everyone to feel comfortable while celebrating with us. If you're unsure, simply aim for polished, elevated resort wear and you'll fit right in.
The Welcome Party will be more relaxed than the wedding day while still embracing the tropical island atmosphere.
Ladies are welcome to wear sundresses, shorter cocktail dresses, dressy two piece sets, or other resort-inspired attire. Gentlemen may wear tailored shorts with a collared shirt, linen shirt, or tasteful Hawaiian shirt.
We kindly ask guests to avoid flip-flops and opt for attire that feels polished yet comfortable.
Think relaxed island chic: comfortable, stylish, and ready to celebrate.
Our wedding ceremony and reception will take place at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, located in Princeville on Kauai's beautiful North Shore.
We recommend staying in either Princeville or Hanalei, as both areas are conveniently located near the venue. Hanalei is approximately a 10-minute drive from Princeville, making either location a great home base for the wedding weekend.
Most of our guests will likely choose to stay in Airbnb or VRBO vacation rentals. If you prefer a resort experience, we recommend Hanalei Bay Resort or The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas, both of which are located just minutes from the venue.
We also have a room block at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay for guests who would like to stay on property. Booking information and room block details will be available soon.
We encourage guests to book accommodations early, as lodging on Kauai's North Shore can fill up quickly.
If you would like assistance finding a vacation rental, please feel free to contact Yen Upson at yen@gathervacations.com or (808) 639-9445. She is familiar with the Princeville and Hanalei areas and can help identify rental options that may be a good fit for your stay.
Yes! We will have a discounted booking link available for 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, which is our wedding venue.
We do not yet have the booking link details available, but we will upload and share it as soon as it is confirmed.
We have also reached out to other nearby hotels; however, most are unable to offer wedding room blocks or provide booking details until approximately six months prior to the wedding date. We will share any additional information as soon as it becomes available.
Guests should fly into Lihue Airport (LIH), the main airport on Kauai.
The airport is approximately a 45-minute drive from Princeville and Hanalei, where we recommend staying for the wedding weekend.
Yes! Transportation will be provided to and from all wedding events, including the Welcome Party and the Wedding Ceremony & Reception.
Guests will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Lihue Airport (LIH).
We highly recommend renting a car for your stay on Kauai. While our wedding events will be located in both Princeville and Hanalei, you'll likely want to explore beyond the wedding festivities. Hanalei is the main town on the North Shore and is home to many of the area's most popular beaches, restaurants, shops, and local attractions.
To make the most of your time on the island, we recommend booking a rental car in advance.
If your invitation included a plus one, we’re so excited for you to bring a guest to celebrate with you.
If your invitation did not include a plus one, we kindly ask that you not bring additional guests. We’ve done our best to thoughtfully include plus ones where possible, and we truly appreciate your understanding.
Children are welcome to attend the Welcome Party on Friday evening. However, the Wedding Ceremony and Reception on Saturday will be adults-only, with the exception of our nephew, Warren.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to celebrating with you!
We recommend arriving in Kauai by Thursday, April 29 at the latest, as we will be hosting a Welcome Party on Friday evening that all guests are invited to attend.
Arriving a few days early is highly encouraged, as Kauai is an incredible place to relax, explore, and enjoy at your own pace. This also allows time to settle in, pick up a rental car, and gather any essentials such as groceries and drinks before the weekend begins.
Guests are welcome to depart anytime on Sunday. For those who are able to stay longer, we highly recommend extending your trip on either end to fully enjoy the island. If you are still on island Sunday, we hope to plan a casual goodbye gathering, such as a beach morning or relaxed breakfast, before everyone heads home.
Kauai weather is typically warm, tropical, and very pleasant year-round. During late April and early May, you can expect daytime temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s°F with comfortable evenings that rarely feel cold.
That said, Kauai is also one of the rainiest places on earth, and conditions can change quickly. Brief showers are common, especially on the North Shore, but they often pass quickly and are part of what keeps the island so lush and beautiful.
We recommend packing light layers and being prepared for both sunshine and rain throughout your stay.
Yes! We will be hosting a Welcome Party on Friday evening, and all guests are invited to attend.
More details, including timing and location, will be shared soon. We can’t wait to kick off the weekend with everyone!
Yes. There is a grocery store in Princeville called Foodland Princeville for any essentials during your stay.
That said, we recommend stopping at Costco or Walmart in Lihue on your way from the airport to stock up on groceries and supplies for your trip. Selection is broader and pricing is typically more reasonable.
Hanalei is the main town on the North Shore and is home to a variety of local restaurants, cafés, and beachside dining options, while Princeville has more limited dining and shopping.
We’ve put together a curated list of our favorite restaurants, beaches, hikes, and island experiences on our Travel Page, which also includes photos and a 3D interactive map to help you plan your time on the island.
We highly recommend exploring it while planning your trip! There are so many incredible things to see and do on Kauai, especially on the North and South Shores.
You can access all of our recommendations on our Travel Page.
Yes. Makana North Shore Urgent Care is located in Princeville, approximately 5 minutes from our venue.
There is also a pharmacy located inside Foodland Princeville for any basic pharmacy needs during your stay.
We highly recommend renting a car during your stay on Kauai. Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are generally sparse, expensive, and unreliable, especially on the North Shore.
Having a car will give you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace, including nearby beaches, Hanalei town, Waimea Canyon, and the South Shore, without long waits or limited availability.
Kauai is in the Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST) zone.
Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time, so the time remains consistent year-round (UTC -10:00).
Hanalei and Princeville are both located on Kauai’s North Shore, but they offer very different experiences.
Hanalei is the main town on the North Shore and is where you’ll find most of the restaurants, cafés, shops, beach rentals, and local businesses. It also sits along the iconic Hanalei Bay, which is perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, surfing, and enjoying the sunset. The town has a relaxed, walkable feel and is the best place to experience the local charm of the island.
Princeville is a residential resort community known for its scenic viewpoints, luxury resorts, and the world-class Princeville Makai Golf Club. It’s a quieter area, ideal for morning coffee walks, scenic drives, sunrise and sunset views, and bike rides along the bluffs overlooking the ocean.
While Princeville offers beautiful views and peaceful surroundings, most dining, shopping, and beach activity will be centered in Hanalei. The two areas are only about a 10-minute drive apart, making it easy to enjoy both during your stay.
We recommend booking flights into Lihue Airport (LIH) as early as possible. Kauai has limited direct flight options, and fares tend to increase as travel dates get closer.
Booking early will also give you the best flexibility with arrival and departure times so you can make the most of your time on the island.
We recommend packing a mix of comfortable island essentials and dressier pieces for wedding events. Helpful items include:
- Light, breathable layers
- A light rain jacket or windbreaker
- Swimsuits and beachwear
- Sandals + nicer shoes for wedding events
- Comfortable walking or tennis shoes / hiking shoes
- Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat)
- Bug spray
- Casual outfits for exploring the island
- Formal attire for the wedding weekend
Yes! There are several beautiful beaches nearby, with excellent options for swimming and snorkeling on the North Shore.
In Princeville, Hideaways Beach is a nearby favorite and is walkable from most accommodations. There is no public parking, so access is primarily on foot. It’s a great spot for swimming and snorkeling when conditions are calm, with a short but steep trail down to the sand.
In Hanalei, Hanalei Bay is the main beach and one of the best on the North Shore for swimming, paddleboarding, surfing, and relaxing. Parking is available at the pier, pavilion, and Pine Trees, all of which provide access to different sections of the bay.
Another excellent snorkeling spot is Tunnels Beach, which has limited roadside parking that can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.
We do advise caution when ocean conditions are stronger, and do not recommend swimming at Lumaha‘i Beach, Queen’s Bath, or along Nā Pali Coast beaches, as conditions there can be unpredictable.
Kauai is relatively simple to get around, with one main highway that loops most of the island. However, travel times are often longer than they appear, especially on the North Shore.
Roads are mostly two-lane and often pass through residential and local areas, so we recommend allowing extra time and enjoying the island at a relaxed pace.
